    Hello,

    You won’t See any **** ( star) like windowZ, You just type password which you want to set and press enter it will accept if you are expecting ***** in Linux for password field you wont be able to see.

    Hope this helps.

    Great thanks. Something so simple that has taken ages to find.
    If we are to take on Windows we must understand that even the simplest of tasks need explaining as if to a four year old child. Thanks again.

    Hello,

    If you are getting this message then find gdm.conf i think its in /etc or /etc/gdm and then in gdm.conf find line call Allow Root Login = false and chage it to true then logout and login again and then try it. I am not using ubuntu very much but this can solve your problem. Let me know its working or not.

    Enjoy Linux :)

  • Paul Wright says:

    Ah, should have noted above that I’m running Kubuntu 10.04. Probably makes a difference.

  • Paul Wright says:

    I seem to have followed your instructions successfully. I think one of the folks commenting above is fooled by the fact that typing in a password does not put in asterisks like it does in Windows. Actually, it doesn’t even move the cursor, so it seems like nothing is happening.

    Anyhow, despite following your instructions, I still cannot log in as root. When I type root and the password into the login box, I get a message “root logins are not allowed”. How do I get past that?

    Hi Alvis,

    You can not achieve all your requirement but of course you can achieve some of those :-

    1) You can not restrict software opening and all this using Ubuntu or Linux
    2) You can have centralized login and centralized username and password for mailing purpose, for login purpose, and for proxy purpose, For this you can try LDAP

    @khan asif ahmed,

    I dont think you can have GUI on server edition.
    Try desktop edition for that.
    And As per I see your comments, I want to say the server edition or any other edition, doesnt ask for ROOT login.
    Its we who need to login as roots sometimes to do some specific work.

    You can do the same things(as ROOT) with the user you created when Installing Linux.
    And Login as ROOT is a bit security issue as well.
    This might help to login as root in Kubuntu/Ubuntu http://hiteshjoshi.com/linux/ubuntukubuntu-login-as-root/

    @Tejas Barot,
    I want to thank you to spread the word of Indian Rupee Fonts,
    Also, Want to appreciate your postings and being an Open Source Lover.

    I’ve been using Ubuntu for five years and have never needed to log in as root.

    If people need a point-and-click root-enable environment it’s far more convenient and far safer to just create a keyboard shortcut or launcher for the command gksudo nautilus
